The incident occurred with the Celtics trailing the Detroit Pistons, 66-54, with about three minutes remaining in the third quarter. This game was very important as the Celtics have struggled mightily this season dropping 5 of their last 6 games. Rondo missed a shot from the lane, Pistons center Greg Monroe landed on top of him. Rondo apparently believed a foul should have been called and was hit with two technicals in a five-second span, the second of which came when he tossed the ball, with some velocity, and hit the referee in the chest.
Rondo will be sitting out the next two games, Monday in Dallas and Wednesday in Oklahoma City.
